Memory Verse Contest Rules
General Rules:
- All contestants ages 9-16 are given the same list of 150 verses.
- The verse list will be rotated every year by 75 new verses.
- All local contestants will quote the verses on a designated day (before the deadline), chosen by the local Sunday School Superintendent, to contest proctors (also chosen by the Sunday School Superintendent from the local congregation).
- The proctor will record all the recited verses, prompts, and mistakes of the contestant on the Official Score Sheet; it is preferred that the proctor be someone other than an immediate family member of the contestant, and a member who is involved in Sunday school teaching/administration.
- The entire list of participants and results will be sent to the ICFG Memory Verse Coordinator by the deadline. (2011 deadline: April 30th)
- The winners will be determined by the highest number of verses quoted correctly.
- Any version of the Bible may be used but it must be a translation, not a paraphrase.
Specific Rules:
- Participants must quote the given verse and reference accurately and perfectly.
- For each contestant, a contest proctor will fill out an Official Score Sheet. Each Score Sheet must:
- include the contestant's personal information (name, age, etc.).
- record the number of verses quoted, the number of prompts given, and the number of mistakes made onto an Official Score Sheet.
- Be signed and dated (space is provided on the back) by the contest proctor who administered it.
- A contest proctor will give the reference to the contestant who will repeat the reference and then quote the verse.
- One prompt per verse is allowed if requested but must be recorded (Prompt= 1 word).
- In the event of a tie, the person with the least prompts will win.
- Self-correction is not an error.
- Each contestant is allowed only ONE mistake, i.e., a missed word or phrase with no self-correction or prompt requested. A second mistake ends the recitation of verses for that contestant.
- Verses must be quoted in the given order listed.
Prize Information:
- The contestants will be split into two age groups: Ages 9-12 and Ages 13-16.
- There will be four First, Second and Third place prize winners in each of the two age groups: Ages 9-12 and Ages 13-16.
- There is a possibility of 24 winners each year.
- Prizes will be awarded according to the highest number of verses quoted correctly.
- First place will only be awarded if the contestant has memorized 65 verses or more. Second place requires at least 35 verses memorized and Third place a minimum of 15 verses.
- First Prize: Any Apostolic Christian Church Camp fee paid PLUS $75.00
- Second Prize: $50.00
- Third Prize $25.00
- Unless otherwise noted, the check will be made out to the contestant.
